Whether you’re visiting for a weekend getaway, a family vacation or an action-packed group trip, this guide will help you decide when to visit, where to explore and what to add to your Grand Junction itinerary.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Grand Junction?

Grand Junction offers something different during every season.

Spring

Spring brings comfortable temperatures and blooming desert landscapes. It is a great time for hiking, mountain biking, UTV tours and exploring the Colorado National Monument before the hottest summer weather arrives.

Summer

Summer is one of the busiest travel seasons in Grand Junction. Plan outdoor activities during the morning or evening, bring plenty of water and reserve popular rentals and tours ahead of time.

Fall

Fall offers cooler temperatures, changing colors and plenty of opportunities for sightseeing and outdoor recreation. It is also a beautiful time to visit the Grand Mesa and explore Colorado’s wine country.

Winter

Winter is typically quieter in the Grand Valley. Conditions can vary greatly between the high desert and nearby mountain areas, so check weather and trail conditions before heading out.

How Many Days Should You Spend in Grand Junction?

A two- or three-day trip will give you time to experience several of the area’s highlights. If you want to explore the surrounding trails, mountains, wineries and national forests, consider staying four days or longer.

Here is an easy three-day itinerary:

Day One: Explore the Colorado National Monument

Start your trip with a drive through the Colorado National Monument. Along the way, you’ll find scenic overlooks, impressive red-rock canyons and hiking trails for different ability levels.

Allow time to stop at the viewpoints instead of rushing through the drive. You can explore the monument in your own vehicle or experience it from the open air with a Slingshot rental or guided tour.

Afterward, spend the evening exploring Downtown Grand Junction’s restaurants, shops, galleries and public art.

Day Two: Experience a Grand Valley UTV Adventure

Grand Junction is home to an enormous network of public off-highway vehicle trails. Adrenaline Driven Adventures provides direct access from its Grand Junction location to approximately 550,000 acres of OHV riding terrain.

Visitors can choose between a self-guided UTV rental or a guided UTV tour.

Self-guided rentals are a good option for experienced riders who are comfortable navigating an extensive system of interwoven trails. Renters are responsible for navigation and must return the UTV washed and fueled.

For first-time UTV drivers and visitors unfamiliar with the area, a guided tour is highly recommended. Your guide drives a separate UTV while you follow in your own machine. The guide handles navigation, selects trails suited to your group and carries tools and water. Fuel and washing are also included with guided adventures.

A two-hour tour offers a quick introduction to the area, but a three-hour tour provides more driving time and additional trails to explore.

Day Three: Choose Your Own Grand Junction Adventure

Use your final day to experience another side of Western Colorado. Depending on your group’s interests, you could:

  • Explore local wineries and tasting rooms

  • Hike among red-rock canyons

  • Rent a Slingshot for a scenic drive

  • Take a dirt bike lesson or guided ride

  • Visit the Grand Mesa

  • Explore the Bookcliffs

  • Experience a guided hiking tour

  • Visit local museums, shops and restaurants

If you have additional time, consider adventures in Rabbit Valley, Bangs Canyon, the Uncompahgre National Forest or the Tabeguache Trail area.

Outdoor Adventures to Add to Your Trip

Grand Valley OHV Area

The Grand Valley OHV Area is one of the most convenient places to experience off-road recreation near Grand Junction. Its massive trail network includes open desert, sandy sections, hills, scenic viewpoints and terrain for multiple skill levels.

Because the trail system is so large and interconnected, it can feel overwhelming to first-time visitors. A local guide can remove the stress of navigation and help your group make the most of its available riding time.

Rattlesnake Arches

Rattlesnake Arches is a memorable destination for travelers who want to combine off-road travel with hiking. Adrenaline Driven Adventures offers a full-logistics ride-along experience that typically lasts four to six hours.

The adventure includes approximately one hour of off-road travel into the area, a three-mile round-trip hike and another hour of off-road travel back out. This is much more than a basic trailhead drop-off and pickup. Guests should be prepared for changing weather, rugged terrain and an active day outdoors.

Seasonal access restrictions may apply, so confirm availability before making plans.

Colorado National Monument

The Colorado National Monument is a must-see during any first trip to Grand Junction. Its dramatic canyons, towering rock formations and scenic overlooks make it ideal for sightseeing, photography and hiking.

Visitors can drive their own vehicle or turn the experience into something special with an open-air Slingshot adventure.

Grand Mesa

Rising above the Grand Valley, the Grand Mesa provides a completely different landscape with forests, lakes, scenic overlooks and cooler mountain temperatures. Conditions at higher elevations can be very different from those in Grand Junction, so bring extra layers and check the forecast before leaving.

Dirt Bike Adventures

Experienced riders can explore Western Colorado through a dirt bike rental or guided adventure. Beginners should start with a lesson or half-day clinic to learn essential controls, body positioning, braking and trail-riding techniques before joining a longer ride.

Adrenaline Driven Adventures offers dirt bike rentals, private lessons, clinics and guided rides for multiple experience levels.

What Should You Pack?

Western Colorado’s weather and terrain can change quickly. Pack according to the season and the activities on your itinerary.

Helpful items include:

  • Refillable water bottle

  • Sunscreen and sunglasses

  • Closed-toe shoes

  • Comfortable hiking clothing

  • Hat or visor

  • Light jacket or extra layers

  • Small backpack

  • Phone charger or power bank

  • Camera

  • Any required medications

Eye protection is required for many off-road adventures. Guests may bring their own or purchase it before the ride. Helmets are included with adventures through Adrenaline Driven Adventures.

Tips for Planning Your Grand Junction Vacation

Reserve Adventures Early

UTV tours, rentals and guided experiences can fill quickly during weekends, holidays and peak travel seasons. Booking early gives you the best choice of dates, machines and departure times.

Do Not Rely Only on Your Phone

Cell service may be limited in remote areas. Download maps before leaving town and let someone know where you plan to go. If you are unfamiliar with the trail system, consider booking a guided experience.

Know the Difference Between a Rental and a Tour

A rental gives you more independence, but you are responsible for navigation and other rental requirements. A guided tour provides local knowledge, navigation support and a more streamlined experience.

Respect the Terrain

Stay on designated routes, follow posted regulations and pack out everything you bring with you. Never assume desert conditions will remain the same throughout the day.

Leave Room in Your Schedule

Grand Junction has more to experience than many first-time visitors expect. Avoid packing every hour of your trip. Give yourself time to stop at scenic overlooks, explore Downtown Grand Junction and discover local restaurants and shops.
